Yom Kippur - Day of Atonement
The holiest day on the Jewish calendar, marking the end of the Days of
Awe, spent in fasting and prayer. The sounding of the shofar, the ram's
horn, signals the end of the holiday.

Sukkot - Festival of Booths
- Harvest Festival
Named after the huts the Jews lived in while wandering in the desert after
the Exodus from Egypt. Marked by building sukkot to eat meals in during
the festival, and in the synagogue with processions with the lulav (palm
branch with myrtle and willow) and etrog (citron fruit).

Atzeret - Eighth Day of Assembly
Either the final day of Sukkot, or a distinct holiday immediately following
Sukkot, depending on which interpretation is followed. Historically, it
allowed an extra day in Jerusalem for Jewish pilgrims go to the Temple.

Torah - Rejoicing for the Torah
Annual cycle of reading the Torah is concluded and a new cycle begun.
Celebrated in the synagogue with singing and dancing and a Torah processional.

Hanukkah - Festival of Lights
Celebrates victory when the Maccabees regained Jerusalem. One day's oil
for the Temple's light lasted eight days. A hanukkiah (menorah) is lit
for eight nights and latkes (potato pancakes) are fried in oil to commemorate
the story. Children play with dreidels and gifts are exchanged.

Tu B'Shevat - New Year of Trees
Marks springtime in Israel. Celebrated with picnics, fruit and planting
trees.

Purim
- Feast of Lots
Commemorates rescue of the Jews in ancient Persia. The reading of the
Book of Esther, costumes, groggers (noisemakers), and Hamantashen are
part of this festival.

Pesach
- Passover
Eight-day festival celebrating the Exodus of Jews from Egypt. At the seder
(literally "order"- the ritual meal, stories and prayers) the
Haggadah ("the telling"-the text of the seder) is read, and
the story of the Exodus is told. Matza is eaten.

Marked by memorials for those who perished in the Holocaust.

Memorial Day for all who died serving Israel. Concludes with a siren blast
as stars appear and Independence Day begins.

B'Omer - Thirty-third Day of Omer
The 33rd day of the Omer, breaking up the seven weeks of semi-mourning
between Passover and Shavuot. Celebrates either the end of a plague among
Rabbi Akiva's students or the victory of Bar-Kokhba's soldiers over the
Romans 2,000 years ago. Celebrated with picnics.

Shavuot - Festival of Weeks
Marks the end of the counting of the omer, a 49-day period that begins
on the second night of Passover and recalls the receiving of the Torah
at Sinai. In biblical times it fell at the end of the spring harvest.
An all-night study session called a tikkun has become increasingly popular.

Tisha
B'Av - Ninth Day of Av
Day of fasting to commemorate the destruction of the First and Second
Temples, the loss of Jewish sovereignty, and numerous other tragedies
said to have fallen this day. The Book of Eicha (Lamentations) is read.
