The Jewish Education Council (JEC) embodies the Federation's ongoing commitment to Jewish education in our community. With the help of the JEC, Seattle has become a premier West Coast center of advanced professional development for Jewish educators. Jewish children of all persuasions are engaging in the wonders of continuing study, Jewish overnight camp, youth groups, and travel to Israel. Adults of all backgrounds are taking the time to study Torah with experienced and dynamic teachers.

This is the vision of the Jewish Education Council: to serve the Greater Seattle Jewish community by enhancing the quality and quantity of Jewish education, both formal and non-formal, for learners at all levels. The JEC coordinates, plans, and evaluates the community's education agenda; advocates for and supports Jewish educators; and provides educational resources and services.

We are proud to provide on-going opportunities for growth and increased levels of Jewish knowledge to all members of our community. Please feel free to explore our website and learn about the various programs which the JEC has to offer.

Study Buddy Volunteer Program
Making a Difference, One Child at a Time

Study Buddy matches volunteer tutors with children in need of academic tutoring. Tutors are encouraged to bring their own strengths and talents into the classroom. Area schools are in need of committed, caring individuals with the desire to make a difference in the life of a child. Commitment is one hour per week.

Contact Starr StarrN@JewishInSeattle.org or (206) 774-2279.

First Annual Torathon

The Jewish Education Council was proud to co-sponsor the first annual Torahthon with Herzl-Ner Tamid this year. One successful class, Jewish Poetry: It’s All in There was taught by the JEC’s own Tammy Kaiser. Tammy is thrilled to share the following poetry written by class participant Robert Goodwin who traveled to Torahthon all the way from Olympia. Robert, keep up the great writing!

Notice Me In Mercy
(Rosh Hashanah 5763)

Quite strange, a poem I had read one night.
Its single closing word had made me pause,
to ponder my own place aboard this flight
to God-knows-where. With all my human flaws,
and having spent these years ignoring laws
writ large in His own Book so long ago,
what might I do today, to give Him cause
to notice me in Mercy, and be slow
to hand down Justice? Surely I must know
the sentence I deserve - that is my due.
He will choose the time to bring me low,
and there will be no “exit interview.”
Having heard His voice, I paid small heed.
For Mercy, more than Justice, I must plead!

These Holy Days: A Ghazal Of Hope

A year has passed. We meet once more these holy days,
Passing through that open door these holy days.

Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Ramadan
Align the times, that all explore these holy days.

The rabbi and imam will meet, as cousins should.
Their prayers for peace none may ignore, these holy days.

The sons of Abraham must choose to end these wars,
Recant that ancient, bloodied lore these holy days.

When songs of peace and war are heard throughout the land,
Who will be our troubadour these holy days?

Palestine and Israel, in war prolonged:
We are cousins, yet much more, these holy days.

When Israel and Palestine refuse to talk,
What hopes for peace may we implore these holy days?

Two congregations speak a common wish – for peace –
Though Jew and Muslim are at war these holy days.

The kin of Jacob, Esau, gather here today;
All know injustice we abhor these holy days.

We talk, that we may understand the other’s ways;
Our prayer for peace we underscore these holy days.

Like my namesake Reuben, I’m a firstborn son;
I pray that Peace will rise and soar, these holy days.
